About Dr Matthew Schwass
Dr Matthew Schwass is a highly trained and dedicated orthopaedic surgeon, specialising in complex hip and knee replacement surgery as well as orthopaedic oncology. With a reputation for meticulous surgical technique, personalised care, and a commitment to clinical excellence, Dr Schwass brings a rare combination of academic rigor, technical expertise, and genuine compassion to every patient interaction.

Born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand, Dr Schwass has long balanced intellectual curiosity with athletic drive. As a national-level powerlifter and multiple New Zealand record holder in his teens, he developed a deep appreciation for the biomechanics of the human body - an interest that naturally evolved into a passion for orthopaedic surgery. His athletic background continues to inform his empathetic approach to patients recovering from injury or striving to regain physical function.

Before pursuing a career in medicine, Dr Schwass completed a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Economics at Victoria University of Wellington. This unique academic foundation sharpened his critical thinking and ethical reasoning, qualities that underpin his thoughtful and patient-focused approach to surgical decision-making. He later earned his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Sydney, where he solidified his commitment to orthopaedics and began his surgical journey.

Dr Schwass undertook his orthopaedic training across a diverse range of metropolitan and regional centres in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, gaining exposure to a wide variety of clinical presentations and surgical challenges in patients of all ages. He obtained his Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), distinguishing himself through both technical proficiency and a deep commitment to patient care.

He subsequently completed a prestigious sub-specialty fellowship in complex hip and knee arthroplasty and orthopaedic tumour surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and North Shore Private Hospital. His advanced training involved managing some of the most challenging cases in joint reconstruction and tumour surgery, including difficult primary and revision joint replacements, custom-made pelvic implants, mega-prostheses, and limb salvage techniques for both benign and malignant musculoskeletal tumours.

Dr Schwass’s dedication to holistic orthopaedic care extends beyond the operating theatre. He has served as a team doctor for multiple rugby league clubs, applying his expertise in sports medicine to help athletes recover from injury and return to peak performance. He continues to engage in regular professional development and international conferences to stay at the forefront of evolving surgical techniques and technologies.

Now based in Coffs Harbour, a community he fell in love with during his training, Dr Schwass is proud to offer world-class orthopaedic care in a regional setting. His wife Lucy grew up in Coffs Harbour, and with her mother still living locally, the region holds a special place in their family’s heart. This personal connection has strengthened their commitment to the area and to contributing meaningfully to the local community. Dr Schwass believes in open, honest communication and tailoring each treatment plan to suit the individual needs and goals of his patients. Whether managing complex joint reconstruction, orthopaedic tumours, or sports-related injuries, his mission is simple: to restore mobility, reduce pain, and enhance the overall quality of life for every person in his care.
